The largest city in the north of the island of Honshu with a population of about one million people was badly damaged during the war. In the center of Sendai, practically nothing has survived, except for the old grid of streets, now built up with skyscrapers. The few monuments of Sendai – mausoleums of the Date feudal family, a Shinto temple, castle ruins and a museum – are located west of the center.
Modern Sendai was founded in 1600, when the feudal ruler (daimyo) Date Masamune, as a result of a complex combination of wars, took possession of large territories in the present Miyagi Prefecture and transferred his residence there, founding a castle and renaming the settlement of Iwatezawa there as Sendai. The site was chosen due to its geographical location – in the center of Date Masamune’s domain, on an important road leading from Edo (now Tokyo), and not far from the sea. Significant changes took place after the Meiji revolution – in 1877, the railway came here from Tokyo, and now it was necessary to get there not in a few days, but in several hours, and in 1907 Tohoku University was founded, one of seven imperial universities in the country and the third in time of foundation.
