The building translated as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial dome in the World Heritage Site is called the Atomic Bomb Dome （Genbaku Dome）in Hiroshima. For the citizens of Hiroshima, the a-bomb dome was “something they didn’t want to see” because it reminded them of the suffering of the atomic bombing.There were many calls for its demolition.
The diary written by Hiroko Kajiyama who died of leukemia at the age of 16 started the preservation movement. A year before she died, on a page dated August 6, 1959, she wrote
”Only that painful A-bomb Dome will continue to tell the world about the horrible atomic bombing.”
