善通寺は、香川県善通寺市にある古寺。和歌山県の高野山、京都府の東寺と共に弘法大師三大霊場の一つとして古くから篤い信仰をあつめてきた古寺です。
弘法大師空海は讃岐国、現在の善通寺市で出生しました。
善通寺は、空海の父で地元豪族の佐伯田公（さえきのたぎみ）から土地の寄進を受け、大同二年（807年）に建立し、弘仁四年（813年）に落成したと伝わっています。
広大な境内は、伽藍と称される東院、誕生院と称される西院の東西二院に分かれており、
金堂、五重塔などが建ち並ぶ伽藍は、創建時以来の寺域であり、御影堂を中心とする誕生院は、空海が誕生した佐伯家の邸宅跡にあたり、ともに弘法大師空海御誕生所としての由縁を今に伝えています。善通寺は、空海の足跡を訪ねる旅には欠かせぬ寺です。

Zentsuji Temple is an ancient temple in Zentsuji City, Kagawa Prefecture. Along with Koyasan in Wakayama Prefecture and Toji Temple in Kyoto Prefecture, it is one of the three sacred sites of Kobo-Daishi, and has long been a place of great devotion.
Kobo-Daishi Kukai was born in Sanuki Province, in what is now Zentsuji City. The temple was built in 807 after receiving a donation of land from Saeki no Tagimi, Kukai’s father and a powerful local family.
The vast precincts of the temple are divided into two sections, the East and West Sections, the East Section called “Garan” and the West Section called “Seiin”.
The Garan, with its Kondo (main hall) and five-story pagoda, is the original temple area, and the Seiin, with its Mikado (main hall), is the former residence of the Saeki family, where Kukai was born, and both still bear the fate of being the birthplace of Kobo-Daishi Kukai.
