Tashirojima Island is a cat-lover’s paradise located just off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture – where 75 percent of the island’s total population is made up of cats! 🐈
Historically a centre for silkworm production, the cats were recruited to the island to control unwanted pests. Local fishermen believed the cats brought good luck for their daily catch and the cat population grew over time as the number of human residents declined.
Visit the island’s Cat Shrine and take home some of the good luck the cats are believed to give. 🐾
