Wow, what a presence this 4th Century BC castle has!
Take a tour with me today to Rozafa Castle!
High atop a craggy mountain bluff surrounded by a total of three 2/3 rivers with views for miles . This was home to the Ancient Illyrian Tribe. Rozafa Castle was a very important castle with three courtyards, many interior buildings and a working cistern with many different access points. I believe this castle was captured at least four times in its history by different nations. Rozafa Castle is often called Shkodër Castle, It is located just on the edge of the City of Shkodër. Unlike many castles I have visited, this castle still has many walls standing on the interior of the castle site. This castle was not a majestic or beautiful place, mostly a working castle, it still has an old Christian Church site that was converted to a Mosque, after being conquered. There is a jail/prison building a large underground cistern, a huge museum building that also houses a wonderful working caffe restaurant. Even a few underground tunnels and secret rooms! This is a wonderful spot to waste a day roaming the grounds, pondering all of the history that had taken place for thousands of years. Check it out!
This is Part one of Two parts.
