If you happen to be in Japan during Golden Week (a string of public holidays from the end of April), you’ll spot koinobori flying in cities and towns all through the country. They celebrate Children’s Day and the nation’s hope for children to grow up healthy and strong. The carp-shaped windsocks are said to represent a mythical carp which swims up a waterfall and turns into a dragon, symbolising courage, strength and patience. 🐟🐉

TOP TIP: Golden Week is very busy, so make sure you make bookings and reservations in advance.
