Let’s head to Hirado, the Northwestern tip of mainland Kyushu!

In today’s video we will be showing you yet another way to travel safely in spite of Covid-19 as Daria from Russia heads to Nagasaki Prefecture’s city of Hirado, the most Northwestern tip of mainland Kyushu.

During Japan’s Middle Ages the city was known as the naval base for the Matsuura Naval Faction and in the 16th and 17th centuries the city served as the port of entry for ships arriving from many foreign nations such as China, Portugal, the Netherlands, and England, giving this prosperous port city its nickname as the Capital of the West.

In the year 1550 the missionary St. Francis Xavier came to Hirado to spread the word about Christianity, resulting in many converts to the Catholic faith. However, under the threat of increasing persecution under Japan’s prohibition of Christianity, the area’s Christians were soon forced to conceal their true faith, ushering in the era of the Hidden Christians. Today the traditions of the Hidden Christian Sites of the Nagasaki and Amakusa Region have been designated as a World Heritage Site.

So check out the video for a heartwarming little getaway to Hirado.
