World Heritage-listed Koyasan, set high up in the Kii mountains of Wakayama Prefecture, is a sacred monastery complex with over 100 temples. Many of the temples offer shukubo, a temple stay experience where guests can experience meditation, copy Buddhist sutras and enjoy shojin ryori, traditional vegetarian cuisine made with locally sourced seasonal ingredients.
