Every winter between November and March, Eastern Hokkaido is home to a mesmorising natural spectacle as the tall and elegant red-crowned cranes mate, performing intricate and seemingly choreographed courtship dances.

Said to be a symbol of longevity and good luck, the crane is an iconic and beloved bird in Japan. It was previously on the 1000 yen note, it’s a part of the Japan Airlines’ logo and is often a motif in art and folklore throughout history.

Due to conservation efforts, half of the world’s red-crowned crane population now live in east Hokkaido, where you can see them year-round.
