Ancient Japanese Shrine and Sacred Waterfall – Fudo Falls in Hachimantai

Sakuramatsu Shrine is a remote shrine deep in Hachimantai known by locals as a “power spot” and generally viewed as an intense location. (When I posted on Facebook about a recent visit here, a Japanese hiking friend commented that I visit “maniac” locations…) But more than the shrine itself, Fudo Falls – the waterfall beyond it, is the main draw for most people. It’s one of the “100 best waterfalls in Japan” and really is pretty spectacular in the summer.

The Yamabushi – mountain ascetics that do spiritual training out in the wild, used to stand under the waterfall and meditate. Also- the snake/dragon shrine here is somewhat rare.
