Come with us on a virtual tour of Koenji – home to what was Tokyo’s punk scene in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Today Koenji is a growing center of alternative youth culture for creatives. However, Koenji managed to avoid modernization of the 1980s, allowing it retain its retro vibe of pre-boom Japan. Koenji is famous for its live music scene, vintage goods (clothes, cameras, vinyl records, souvenirs etc), great cafes and food. Its night life is something to be experienced too with lots of izakaya to enjoy relatively cheap street food and drinks. If you like Shimokitazawa but want to spend time amongst the older crowd, Koenji is the place to be.
