Illegal to Use Bike Bell.. 😲 How Strict Are Cycling Laws in Japan?

Today Tomoko and I our going to talk about cycling laws that you should know in Japan. We’ll start with the normal cycling laws and work our way up to the unique and strange cycling laws.

With my regular bike commuting videos on this channel, I’ve been getting a lot of questions about some of the cycling rules in Japan, so here it goes.. How do these cycling rules / bike commuting rules differ from your county?

Japan is a country of rules (often grey zone rules), and some of the rules for riding a bike are very different compared to other countries.

Here are some timestamps for different rules we go over
00 – Basic cycling laws
33 – Pedestrians
00 – Cycling on sidewalks
07 – Helmets
42 – Left side of the road / people riding on the opposite side of the road
15 – Brakes on bicycles
00 – Drinking and riding
25 – Bike lights
50 – Bikes on trains
28 – Start strange laws
40 – Bicycle registration system
08 – Police stops
40 – No cycling side by side
40 – 2 people on the same bike (futarinori)
20 – tandem bicycles
03 – children seats on bikes
09 – umbrellas while cycling
05 – cell phone while cycling
25 – music while cycling / earphones
50 – the strangest law (in my opinion)
