Higanbana in Tokyo: Looking for the Legendary Japanese Hell Flowers

A quick trip to find Higanbana at the Koshikawa Korakuen Gardens in Tokyo with my friend Capsulebunny!

Higanbana, also called spider lilies (Lycoris radiata), are related to death in Japanese folklore. They bloom during higan, the autumn equinox, a time to visit your ancestor’s graves, and are said to grow on the shores of the river that leads to hell.

Higanbana grow on graves, but also on riverbanks, like the ones in Korakuen. Normally, at this time of year, there would be big higanbana flower festivals, with millions of the red blossoms, but most of those festivals were cancelled this year, so the flowers were harder to find… Fortunately, the Korakuen Garden in central Tokyo still had some!
