When we got invited to go on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, we had no idea what a treat we would be in for.
The zoo’s director, Thane Maynard showed us around, which was a treat in and of itself. Thane is internationally known for his research and dedication to wildlife preservation and his passion for the animals and people at the Cincinnati Zoo shines through from the moment you meet him.
The highlight of our visit was our up close and personal encounter at the hippo habitat, where we got to meet the world’s most famous hippo, Fiona, and her mom, Bebe. Fiona became famous when she was born six months premature at the Cincinnati Zoo.
Thane told us at first, he was certain she wouldn’t make it. She was only 29 pounds, whereas the typical baby hippo can be up to 120 pounds. But, two dedicated female zookeepers were determined to help Fiona survive, and with the help of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, were able to nurse her to health despite her unlikely rate of survival.
Today Fiona the hippo’s story is an international success. People come from all over the world to meet her, so we were super honored to get the chance to see her up close.
But, the Cincinnati Zoo is home to many more incredible animals as well. From bald eagles and Gibbons monkeys to the cutest kangaroos and a baby rhino, the zoo has something for all ages.
If you find yourself in Cincinnati, make sure you don’t miss the chance to visit the zoo.

__ 🗺️ ABOUT WANDERLOCAL _________________________
Hello, friends! We’re Lauren and Daniel. For nearly a decade, we chased the American dream of owning our own business. We built a successful communications agency and had “it all” but were tired, overworked, and unfulfilled.
After watching a documentary on minimalism in January 2019, we sold everything, except our company, and took off to travel the world!
But after a year and a half of travel, we got stuck in Morocco and had to take a US rescue flight home during COVID-19. So, needless to say, we’re pretty excited to stay on American soil for a while.
We’ve always been passionate about exploring local while we travel, but small businesses need all of us to #shoplocal now more than ever, and we want to inspire people to do just that.
We’re on a mission to visit all 50 states in 365 days while shopping 100% American made, all in an Airstream.
It’s our hope by sharing our adventures and tips for shopping locally, you will be inspired to do the same – creating your own incredible memories in our beautiful country while you #wanderlocal.
