In late September 2020, I joined a group to evaluate and provide feedback to the Ministry of Environment on a hiking experience inside the Chubu Sangaku National Park. The project also involved filming for a promotional video, so there were quite a few in the group including professional mountain guides and National Park rangers. But for the most part, my buddy Mark Brazil and I walked alone. Of course, the climax was summiting Mt. Yarigatake (3,189m), Japan’s 5th highest peak, the “Matterhorn of Japan,” and just an all-around beautiful place! It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but so good I might do it again!
Or do you have suggestions for places to hike in Japan? Please comment below.
Day 1: Walked in constant rain from the trailhead at Kamikochi to the Yarisawa Lodge, and spent the night there.
Day 2: Hiked up to the Yarikatake Lodge, summited, and spent the night there.
Day 3: Hiked around the summit area for filming
Day 4: Hiked down from Yarigatake to Kamikoshi (trailhead)
