Hiking the Three Most Sacred Mountains in Yamagata | Dewasanzan Pilgrimage with Yamabushi

In August I had the opportunity to take part in a Yamabushi training in Yamagata. “Kaihogyo” is a type of training involving walking through the mountains while meditating in silence and praying at multiple holy sites. Through traversing from Mt. Haguro to Mt. Gassan and finally to Mt. Yudono, the pilgrim goes from the world of the present to the past (and realm of death) and is finally reborn in the future. These are the most sacred mountains to the Yamabushi ascetic monks in Yamagata.
