次回から3週連続で、奈良県に鎮座する丹生川上神社という名社を紹介したいと思います。
丹生川上神社は、天武天皇の御代である西暦675年に「人聲（ひとごえ）の聞こえざる深山吉野の丹生川上に、我が宮柱を立てて敬き祀らば、天下のために甘雨（かんう）を降らし、霖雨（りんう）を止めん」という神託を受けて創祀されました。
以来、祈雨―甘雨、そして止雨－霖雨を止める社として重んじられ、西暦927年には「延喜式神名帳」では最高社格の名神大社に列格。国歌の大事に朝廷から特別な奉幣を受ける「二十二社」の一つにも選ばれ、どの時代にも最高社格を有していました。
しかし、応仁の乱を境に、乱戦の煽りで社運が下降。それまでの5世紀半で朝廷から96回の奉幣を受けた名社にもにも関わらず、いつしか所在地すら不明に。
やがて太平の江戸の世が訪れると、丹生川上神社を再び蘇らせる気運が高まり、明治4年に現在の丹生川上神社下社が「丹生川上神社」であるとされました。
その後、上社、中社も丹生川上神社であるとされ、戦前には3社を合わせて丹生川上神社とし、現在に至っています。
水はすべての命を育むもの。世界中の人々が水の恩恵を心に刻みますが、とりわけ農耕民族はその傾向が強く、稲作が国家の基盤だった日本も水神信仰が盛んであり、折に触れて晴雨や治水を神に祈りました。祈雨・止雨で有名な丹生川上神社に比定される3社も、それぞれ霊験あらかたな水神を祀っています。
3社とも森閑（しんかん）とした風情が漂っており、人が慌ただしくひしめくようになった現代において、静寂たる様が人の心に染み入る場所になっているのではないかと思います。

Niu-Kawakami Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Nara, Japan.
The shrine became the object of Imperial patronage during the early Heian period. In 965, Emperor Murakami ordered that Imperial messengers were sent to report important events to the guardian kami of Japan. These heihaku were initially presented to 16 shrines including the Niu-Kawakami Shrine.
From 1871 through 1946, the Niu-kawakami Jinja was officially designated one of the Kanpei-taisha, meaning that it stood in the first rank of government supported shrines.
Water nourishes all life. People all over the world remember the benefits of water, especially among the agricultural people. In Japan, where rice cultivation was the foundation of the nation, the belief in the water god was also popular, and people prayed to the gods for clear rain and flood control from time to time. Niu-Kawakami Shrine enshrines a famous water god.
