Ōwakudani (大涌谷, “Great Boiling Valley”) is a volcanic valley with active sulphur vents and hot springs in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It was created around 3,000 years ago, as a result of the explosion of the Hakone volcano.
It is a popular tourist site for its scenic views, volcanic activity, and kuro-tamago (黒卵, “black egg”) — a local specialty of eggs hard-boiled in the hot springs.
Kuro Tamago” are cooked in the geothermal heat of the hot spring and turn black as a result of chemical reactions with volcanic gas. It is said that eating one adds seven years to your life, as the boiled eggs are believed to bring good fortune. It is a specialty item that can only be purchased here. Also check out the character goods featuring “Kuro Tamago” designs and other black items related to black eggs.
