Kyoto Festival: 47 Ronin Reenactment at Bishamon-dō (Gishi Matsuri)

Who here has seen the ’47 Ronin’ movie with Keanu Reeves? What did you think? The movie is based on a famous Samurai story that dates back to the year 1703. It’s one of Japan’s most loved tales about how 47 Samurai sacrificed their lives to avenged their lord.

Last month in Yamashina Kyoto, there was a festival called ‘Gishi matsuri’ which celebrates this heroic story. It was based in Yamashina as this it was the place where Kuranosuke Oishi (a famous samurai) lived until him and the other samurais successfully took revenge. The main event of the day is a procession, but the day was also filled with exhilarating performances such as taiko drums, a bon dance and a dramatic reenactment of the Ronin story.
