Let us introduce you to Koyasan. 🌲🌿 A World Heritage site, the eight peaks and basin of Koyasan are reminiscent of the auspicious lotus flower. Founded by Kobo Daishi (also the founder of Shingon Buddhism) in 816AD, this monastery complex was once home to over 2,000 temples, with 117 remaining today. A great way to experience Koyasan is by spending a night at one of the 52 temples that offer accommodation, peaceful gardens and relaxing hot springs. Other experiences include early morning meditations, sampling ‘shojin ryori’, traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine, or for something extra special, join a guided night-walk ⁣into the otherworldly Okunoin Temple. Stone lanterns light the way, with moss-covered tablets and statues built to honour the memories of those who have passed on, while you discover local stories and little-known secrets. If you’re lucky, you may even see fireflies in the summertime!⁣ ✨ 📷 Captured by @ryu_1987. #VisitJapanAU #Tradition
