The Kumano Kodo is a series of interlinked pilgrimage trails throughout
the southern Kansai region of Japan. The sacred shrines on the peninsula
have been attracting pilgrims for over 1000 years and it is one of only
two pilgrimage routes in the world designated the Unesco world heritage
status.
The Nakahechi route we were following was a 38.5 km marked trail
through the forest with a decent amount of elevation, we would finish up with a boat ride down to the town of Shingu on the coast which was where we would complete our journey.
It was recommended to be completed in 5 days, staying at various
guesthouses along the way, but we thought it would be funny to
try to do it in 3 days, saving money by camping and carrying
all of our own food and equipment.
So off we went on our adventure excited to disconnect from
the modern world and live simply for a short time, whilst taking in all
the sights and sounds of this extremely pristine and beautiful region
in Japan, hoping to learn about the culture and history of the trails on our way
Our story begins in the town of Takijiri-Oji, as we set off in good spirits on our adventure. What we didn’t realise was that the first bit was entirely uphill.
