#Shiretoko
Shiretoko National Park, Hokkaido, Japan
10 October 2019
This #travel video is a part of the #Japan #roundtrip we have made in October 2019.
We started with a short but steep climb to a rock in Utoro. It was a nice view of the town. The fishing boats returned to the harbor fully loaded.
Furepe falls was disappointing. There was little water. We couldn’t find the tap. Perhaps we have set too high demands on waterfalls since the largest waterfalls in Iceland and Victoria Falls. (See:
After a cup of coffee in the sun we found a forest walk of 4 km. It was a leisurely hike in an autumn colored forest with a view of Mount Rausu, the highest mountain in Shiretoko.
We drove further into the Shiretoko National Park. On the way we saw some people standing aside with large photo and video cameras. A young bear appeared to be in the river. The bear was playing with freshly caught salmon. It was a beautiful scene, the highlight of the trip so far.
After fifteen minutes we drove to the Shiretoko Gogo Field House. There we wanted to walk the 5 lakes trail. Unfortunately, this trail was under maintenance and therefore closed. We could still walk the short route where we could still see 2 lakes. First we had to get a bear diploma. The crash course “What to do if you encounter a bear” lasted 10 minutes. All 7 of us passed and went into the forest with confidence. It was a nice walk. There was no confrontation with a bear.
We drove a bit further east, towards the end of the world (Shiretoko means “end of the world” in the Ainu language). The dirt track continued to Kamuiwakka Hot Falls. This waterfall is not so special to see but special to feel. It is a waterfall of warm water. Not warm enough for a nice shower, but still.
The road stops after the waterfall. Furthermore, you can only go on foot or by boat (but that was not possible). The area is really only brown bear.
Back on the paved road we drove up the Shiretoko Pass. From here we had a beautiful view of the disputed island of Kunashiri. This Russian island is located only 24 km from Rausu. After World War II, that originally Japanese island was added to Russia. Japan still claims this.
In Shibetsu we now also wanted to eat salmon. The bear had made us good. However, no salmon was found in this salmon city. Yet we had a delicious meal again.
