Summer festivals or “matsuri” are held all over Japan from July through August. Some people wear happi coats to these festivals, which are traditional Japanese straight-sleeved cotton coats. And these cotton coats are usually imprinted with repetitive, overlapping patterns in different colors and distinctive designs to symbolize the crests of one’s family, shops, organizations or affiliations.
