Hirotoshi Ito turns stones from Matsumoto into unsettling and humorous creations. “I went to University knowing I would be a stone supplier so I wanted to do something else whilst I was there. So I started to work on metals which is called hammering. After that, I started to work for my father’s company. It’s been nearly 40 years.” “Matsumoto is a castle town surrounded by mountains and the castle is a national treasure. I use stones from this area which pays homage to this town, which I have been living in for a long time. and I think that is part of my identity.”
