I’ve been talking a lot about different anime spots, anime cafés, anime events, things to see in Japan, but today I thought I’d make a quick summary on how you can prepare your trip or your anime pilgrimage before coming to Japan.

I’ll be giving you five tips that every anime or manga fan should know before coming to Tokyo. So, the first tip is to answer the question, is it really worth it and should you really come to Japan if you’re a huge anime or manga fan? And the answer is yes. There’s no better anime paradise than Japan where it’s all made.

What’s the best place to visit in Japan? Tokyo, it’s where most of the anime studios are. It’s where most of the anime artists live, which is probably the reason why also the most popular anime series and stories and mangas are based typically around Tokyo and around the city.

Tip number 3: Where should you stay? Anywhere close to Akihabara. But, from my personal experience, I recommend actually that you try to find something closer to Shinjuku or Shibuya. Shinjuku and Shibuya are the cultural centers of Tokyo in a more general sense, not specifically just for anime.

Tip number four, when should you come? The best time to come to Tokyo is actually the end of March, beginning of April because the most important anime event is being organized at this time, which is AnimeJapan. AnimeJapan is this big event where all the anime studios come together.
If you can’t make it during that time period, of course, there’s a lot of events—big events and small events—happening in Tokyo throughout the whole year. Some of the more important ones and interesting ones I recommend you definitely go and check out at least once are more towards around the summer. Two that I can recommend is Comiket, which is short for comic market, which is the biggest in terms of the number of people that attend, and it’s centered around manga artists and doujinshis, and it’s like a sea of tables and artists and big boobs and art. And the second event I want to tell you about is called Wonfes, which is very similar but it focuses on figurines rather than mangas.

Anime Cafés are very interesting. They’re like normal cafés but they’re very well-themed and they usually have themed food as well which can be very good. We went last year, for example, to a Full Metal Alchemist café which was amazing. Super well decorated. You could just feel the ambiance and bring back all the memory from this awesome anime that is Full Metal Alchemist which was surprising because, you know, it’s an old anime and we haven’t heard a lot about it for a long time, so it was definitely, like, amazing to find out about this café and go there.

The food selection is very interesting and unique, but it’s usually very small. And if you do have any food restrictions or nutritional requirements, it might be hard to find stuff that suits your needs if you’re vegan or, for example, other stuff like that.

The fifth and final tip for you today is where do you go and buy all the good merchandise. And more specifically I want to talk about anime t-shirts because I personally like anime t-shirts a lot.

Japanese people are not such big fans of t-shirts and posters. You can find a lot of, you know, small plastic keyrings, bubbles, plastic folders, a lot of figurines.

It’s very difficult to find posters and anime t-shirts. The place I recommend you to go to buy all your anime merchandise, of course, is Akihabara. It has the most stores, but be careful because you can spend a lot of time going through the hundreds of stores that are in Akihabara and not be able to find exactly what you’re looking for.

We have an article on our website where we’ve detailed the location of the five best stores to buy anime t-shirts. So you can go on our website and check it out. My favorite is COSPA. They have a very big collection, and you’ll be able to find any t-shirts about any anime that’s trending right now.
