MYSTERIOUS JAPAN: ABANDONED CORONAVIRUS SHRINE IN KYOTO

Deep in the bamboo groves of Fushimi, Kyoto lies the abandoned Oiwa (Oh-iwa) Shrine. It’s said that paying your respects here cures lung complaints. Kind of apt at the moment. What caught my eye, however, stumbling over it on the internet late one evening, were the magnificent torii gates that adorn its entrances, crafted and donated by renowned Kyoto artist Domoto Inshou.
Though recently abandoned, typhoons and the courses of the seasons have taken a toll on the place. With a little more recognition and a recent extension to the Kyoto Trail through the area, hopefully, the shrine’s preservation will be considered. It is indeed a truly unique spot.

P.S. I’ll be back on my regularly scheduled Kyoto hundred mountain hunt momentarily.
