On Sunday, April 28th (2019) from 10-4 this Kyushu (Fukuoka) Vegan Festival was held in the city center’s popular Maizuru park.

There was actually a curry festival and a craft beer festival being held on the same day at a different end of the park which provided a big contrast: the vegan festival asked people to bring their own plates, utensils, and cups and there was very little plastic in use compared to the typical curry and beer festival where single-use plastic was used for everything and customers threw garbage away without thinking twice about its impact.

This Vegan festival was a small gathering of about 50 stalls selling clothing, chocolate, sweets, foods and encouraging the use of bicycles and discussions about animal rights. It was a good chance to meet many friendly people trying to live life and do business at a higher ethical standard without sacrificing the needs of their communities or damaging the environment. Small business entrepreneurs, activists & members of the community at the festival so clearly trying to seek out sustainable lifestyles.

If I could suggest one improvement it would be to add more types of food stalls. A lot of the food stalls ran out of food quickly, had long lines and there was not as much diversity of food as we had hoped for. However, the curries, dumplings, chocolate, cookies, and vegetables we ate were all stunning.
