New Year’s in ToKyo
New Year’s is the most important traditional holiday celebrated in Japan.
Hatsumode festivities are held at practically every shrine and temple across Japan during the first dew days of the year, especially on January 1.
Even people who do not ordinarily go to shrines or temples in everyday life go at New Year’s to pray for their health and their families’ happiness.
New Year’s sunrise is said to be very special and has supernatural powers. It has become a popular practice to gather at beaches to pray to the first sunrise of the new year. Families pray for health and well-being of the ones they love.
The entrances to many homes in Japan are decorated with a pine and bamboo kadomatsu. This decoration is prepared to welcome the Shinto gods and derives from the Shinto belief that the god spirits reside in trees.
Entrances to ordinary homes are decorated with a shimenawa braided straw rope.
While nowadays kids are most likely to play TV games over the holidays, there are a variety of games that have been traditionally played at New Year’s in Japan.
