In today’s video we are looking at the new Playsis East Tokyo Hostel in Asakusa.

This hostel was brand new when we stayed. It offered several floors of rooms – all dorm style. I don’t believe there were any private rooms. They rooms were nicely laid out. There were about 30 beds in the room – the most of any hostel I’ve ever stayed.

We didn’t find the rooms to be noisy, but the rooms were hardly full. The beds were moderately comfortable. The beds felt like they had packing peanuts in the mattress and were firm. We didn’t have the best sleep, but it wasn’t the worst sleep either. The pillows and blankets were comfortable and warm.

The beds are completely boxed in, unlike typical bunk beds. Although this allowed for more privacy, we did notice that it prevented good air flow, and although the room was air conditioned, the bunks themselves got very warm.

The washrooms are shared – which is fine, but atypical. There are “male” and “female” bathroom stalls within the bathroom, but the sinks are in a common space. This set up is ideal for couples, but some single passengers may not like the mixed gender washrooms.

The shower rooms were completely separate. There were only 2 showers on each floor. We didn’t have an issue with getting into a shower, but I can see this becoming a problem if this facility does fill up.

One of the biggest downsides to this place was the lack of kitchen. Due to lack of kitchen, it does force you to eat our or purchase unhealthy food that doesn’t require to keep stored in a fridge, or heated up.

There are also no indoor common spaces. On the roof there is a nice deck that can accommodate a large group of people, but if the weather turns for the worse, you are limited to the bedrooms or offsite locations to hang out.

We had mixed opinions about this place. We didn’t leave hating the location, but it was far from the top of our favorite stays from the trip within Japan and from other international locations we have stay at in the past.
