Now that we’re in November, the scenery of Japan has begun to transform! Forests and mountains are bursting with shades of gold, fiery crimson and yellow, inviting you to experience the seasonal splendor. It’s time for “momiji-gari,” or fall foliage hunting.
Aomori Prefecture, home to Misawa Air Base, offers countless excellent attractions for enjoying autumn colors, as it is located at the northern extreme of the Honshu mainland and autumn arrives earlier here than in most other parts of Japan.

Located in the center of Aomori’s Shimokita Peninsula, about a two-hour drive from the air base, the Kawauchigawa Keikoku is a scenic gorge that stretches along the Kawauchi River. The gorge features impressive landscapes made up of unique rock formations, beautiful waterfalls and crystal-clear mountain streams.

As the surrounding forests turn brilliant shades of red and gold from mid-October through early November, the gorge offers one of the region’s premier destinations for fall foliage viewing. You can hike or drive along the riverside to enjoy the scenic valley filled with vibrant autumn colors.
Yoshihito Morita, an employee of Misawa Base Commissary who recently visited the area, said he was able to enjoy the beautiful fall foliage at its peak along the gorge.
Nearby, Mt. Kamafuse Tenbodai is a popular observation point located on the 878-meter-tall mountain top, known for its stunning night view of Mutsu City stretching down below. The impressive night view is often called “Butterfly of Light,” making the observatory well worth a stop.

Strong winds are common in the area, according to Morita, so be sure to bring a warm jacket when you visit these autumn attractions.
