Tsuru-no-yu is the oldest and most famous of the seven, with a milky-white open-air bath. Dinner on tatami, baths by lamplight after dark, mist in the forest in the morning, then the other inns’ baths: every spring has its own colour.

Komachi shinkansen from Tokyo to Tazawako (about 3 h), then the Nyuto Line bus (about 50 min). Day bath at Tsuru-no-yu ¥700 (10:00–15:00, no day visitors on Mondays). Overnight guests can buy the ¥2,500 Yumeguri pass: one bath at all 7 inns.

Milky, clear or orange: which onsen would you pick?
