Travel + Leisure Co. is preparing to open a newly refurbished ski resort in Japan ahead of the winter season.
Club Wyndham Maruike Shiga Kogen, a 16-room resort acquired by Travel + Leisure Co. earlier this year, has been rebranded and will welcome Club Wyndham owners and guests this winter. An extensive refurbishment introduces Western-style comfort while preserving the character of a traditional Japanese mountain resort. Additionally, the property’s lobby is receiving a light refresh, and the ski rental room and lockers are being completely upgraded.
Located in Shiga Kogen, Nagano, it is Asia’s largest ski precinct and one of Japan’s leading mountain destinations, boasting the country’s highest skiable terrain at a peak elevation of 2,307 metres. The area is also the most accessible major ski area from Tokyo via bullet train to Nagano and a connecting bus.
Club Wyndham Maruike Shiga Kogen is near Club Wyndham Shirakabaso Shiga Kogen, creating the potential for a dual-resort experience offering guests an expanded range of dining, beverage and recreation experiences across both properties.
“This purchase and opening of this resort are a strategic move to expand our presence in regional Japan,” Travel + Leisure Co. President and Managing Director, International Operations, Barry Robinson said.
“It gives us economies of scale and greater potential to offer guests enhanced experiences in a location we see growing in popularity as a year-round destination. Through our presence in this region, we intend to elevate Shiga Kogen’s status as a ski precinct to local and international tourists, create additional employment locally, and contribute to the expansion of Nagano’s tourism industry.”
Club Wyndham Shirakabaso features onsen hot springs, a whisky bar, a lobby café, a pizza restaurant, and a full-service ski rental and retail shop offering a range of premium ski equipment and rental options. An hour away is Club Wyndham Chikumakan Nagano, a traditional ryokan resort that offers both indoor and outdoor onsen.
Through these resorts, Travel + Leisure Co. remains the only international hospitality operator in the Joshin’estu National Park.
