TOKYO – Vietnamese President To Lam will make a four-day visit to Japan from Nov. 8 for talks with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the top Japanese government spokesman said Friday.

Lam, who heads Vietnam’s ruling Communist Party, and his wife will also meet with Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara told a press conference in Tokyo, noting he hopes the visit will help to deepen bilateral ties.

The two nations, as “comprehensive strategic partners,” have strengthened relations in the fields of security, the economy and people-to-people exchanges, as well as collaboration on addressing regional and global issues, Kihara said.

According to a source close to the matter, the Japanese government is arranging for Lam to address the parliament, likely on Nov. 9, at the request of the Vietnamese side, and a joint statement is expected to be issued after he meets with Takaichi.

Japan places emphasis on boosting ties with Southeast Asian countries, given China’s growing military and economic influence in the region.
