Late last year, it was revealed that Iowa would be getting its very first conveyor belt sushi restaurant. Now, after 10 months of waiting, that restaurant is finally ready to open its doors! Kura Revolving Sushi Bar will begin welcoming customers this weekend at Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines.

According to the official website, Kura Revolving Sushi Bar was established back in 2008 as a subsidiary of Kura Sushi, Inc. There are currently more than 550 Kura Sushi locations across the U.S., Japan, and Taiwan, but this will be the first here in the Hawkeye State.

Conveyor belt sushi, aka “kaiten-zushi,” is a casual style of dining where restaurant-goers can choose their dishes off a rotating belt that travels throughout the restaurant. Unlike an all-you-can-eat buffet, this type of restaurant charges by the plate. It may sound a bit confusing at first, but it’s actually pretty simple! Here’s a breakdown of how it works.

Every table is next to a portion of the conveyor belt – you never have to get up to go grab a dish! It will travel right past your seatEvery plate that comes by on the main conveyor belt costs the same amount, so you don’t have to worry about keeping track of pricesIf you don’t see what you want on the conveyor belt, you can also use the tablet at your table to order a specific dish – anything you order on the tablet will be delivered to you via the “express belt,” which is located right above the main conveyor beltEach dish on the conveyor belt is placed a plate inside of a “Mr. Fresh” dome, which pops open when you reach for it. Just take the dish and leave the dome! When you’re done with your plate, simply slide it into the designated plate slot at your table – that’s how the restaurant keeps track of how much to charge you on your final bill (and you can win prizes, too!)

The menu at Kura offers a wide variety of sushi, including rolls, nigiri, sashimi, gunkan, hand rolls, and wraps. If sushi isn’t really you’re thing, you can also order other items, like miso soup, tempura, edamame, udon, ramen, and various other appetizers and desserts.
