A group of Japanese investors announced plans to initially invest $1.2 billion in Bangladesh’s tourism and hospitality sector, according to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.

The announcement came at a meeting between the investors and Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat at the Secretariat in Dhaka today, according to a ministry press release.

Responding to the announcement, Millat said the government would take necessary steps once the investors submitted a formal investment proposal.

He said the government welcomed foreign investment to develop the tourism sector and was interested in public-private partnerships (PPPs) that would benefit both sides.

The minister added that Bangladesh Tourism Board representatives would soon arrange visits to tourism sites for the investors.

The Japanese representatives expressed their willingness to work with Bangladesh to develop its tourism sector.

Millat said Japan had long been a development partner of Bangladesh and that the government was ready to facilitate Japanese investment in the sector.
