TOKYO: Tokyo Tower was illuminated in red on Saturday to support global polio eradication efforts ahead of World Polio Day on October 24.
The landmark Tower glowed red from 6 p.m. until midnight as part of the “World Polio Day 2026 in Tokyo Tower” campaign. Earlier that day, the tower’s south-side parking area hosted a public event featuring stage performances, activities, and food trucks. Organized by Rotary International District 2750, the event included a charity lighting ceremony funded by sponsorships, which also covered operating costs.
Organizers intended the event to educate the public on the global challenge of polio and encourage individuals to contribute to a healthier future. While polio once threatened children in Japan, it is now rare in the country. However, the event emphasized that the fight against the disease must continue globally, regardless of its status as a local public health concern.
By displaying the message “END POLIO NOW” on one of the capital’s most recognizable landmarks, organizers reached a broad audience of tourists, families, and residents. The initiative highlighted the importance of international cooperation and the collective responsibility to ensure children worldwide can grow up in good health.
