Located in Shimabara, [Kadoya] is said to have been one of Kyoto’s premier banquet venues during the Edo period. The [Kadoya Culture and Hospitality Art Museum] is an art museum that showcases both the [Kadoya] building itself—the only surviving example of a “ageya” (a traditional Japanese banquet hall, equivalent to a modern ryotei)—and the museum’s art collection. The building, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, retains many spaces throughout that convey the atmosphere of the past, such as the kitchen on the first floor and the tatami-mat rooms on the second floor. Guided tours are available at scheduled times on both the first and second floors, and advance reservations are required to visit the second floor. Be sure to also enjoy the garden, which is designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty by the City of Kyoto.
