Japan’s Tax-Free Shopping Is Changing 🇯🇵 Tourists Need to Know This

Japan is changing this fall! 🇯🇵 In this Tokyo travel update, we explore some of the biggest changes and things you should know before visiting Japan in October and November 2026.

We start at Meiji Jingu Gaien to check Tokyo’s autumn colors and October weather, then try the viral “I’m donut ?” before walking through Omotesando and Harajuku.

Most importantly, Japan’s tax-free shopping system is changing from November, so if you’re planning to shop during your trip, make sure you know what to expect.

We’ll also check out the new area at Yoyogi Park, eat at one of my favorite ramen shops in Shibuya, and see how Shibuya is changing — including the latest rules surrounding Halloween.

📍 Places featured:
Meiji Jingu Gaien
Omotesando
Harajuku & Takeshita Street
Yoyogi Park
Shibuya

  1. I love the new tax rule.
I don’t think there should be tax free shopping for tourists.
Prices are still incredibly cheap, and the taxes help support the infrastructure that the tourists use during their travels.

  2. The tax rule should have been tightened to prevent the fraud rather than affect everyone doing the right thing. This will impact businesses as people will buy less. That will hurt them more than the tax they keep. People saying there should be no tax exemption for tourists selfishly ignore the billions that tourism brings to countries each year and the small vendors who rely on that to survive.

  3. They have been mentioning this for quite some time now….lets see how fast they make tax refund process see if they sincere to fight aganst fraud or just want to rake in more tourist money

  4. The trees in the park and on the street were so beautiful. I'm looking forward to your autumn leaves videos coming soon. Arigatougozaimasu, Rion! Let's keep walking!🚶🏻‍♂

  5. Hi Rion 👋
    questions?
I'm traveling to Japan next week and will be staying for three weeks, heading back to Los Angeles in November 5.. Of course, I'll do some shopping before November 1st. The rules regarding tax-free purchases changed on that day, so if I bought something before November 1st, do I need to show the receipt at the airport?

  6. Japan goes above and beyond to accommodate travelers, especially the English speaking ones. We all need to pay taxes. Especially if your dollar is much higher than the yen

  7. OMG! I have been to 80% of these places in this video when I was in Tokyo last year. 😮

  8. What a lovely day for a refreshing walk! I'm so tempted to try that yummy I'm Donut. Also, is there a plain no meat Ichiran ramen I can find in Osaka?😊
And yes, the tax refund system is changing this November, so now it's the perfect time to go on a shopping spree! Can't wait to be there soon
Looking forward to your Halloween and autumn walk adventure!😊

  9. Thank you for the Shibuya walk for today Rion! I really miss the atmosphere there and hope I can be back later in the month. I really support you doing new things for the channel, but for me your usual thumbnails are better than AI ones. Also, I hope you can explain the new tax refund system in better detail in a future video because many tourists rely on you for these updates. I am looking forward for more videos and will always support you through and through. Let's keep walking!

  10. Yes the price at Ichiran is still a bit pricey for Japan. We ate at the Kyoto Ichiran Ramen. It was mecha oishi, but not the best of 6 ramen shops we ate at during our 2 weeks in Japan. I thought Setagaya at Haneda was really tasty. Plus the gyoza was delicious. The chicken broth ramen with fried rice in Minato City next to Tokyo Tower was also very good.

  11. I heard more typhoons are coming your way so be careful. I'm going to miss the old tax-free method, most likely not bother with the new method since I don't have much time before leaving Japan 🙁 Thank you for the great Harajuku and Shibuya walk, just seeing both areas bring me so much energy haha~ Have a great weekend Rion!

  12. 🎉diese baustelle wird im Frühjahr 2027 fertig sein. Es wird sicherlich sehr schön werden. Hier ist es schon Herbst. Ungefähr 20 Grad tagsueber und viel Regen.
