Wawa used to be an institution. A crucial thread to the fabric of society and culture within the greater Philadelphia area. Whenever anybody from outside the area would label it as “shitty gas station food”, we would come rushing to Wawa’s defense. We’d say, “you uncultured piece of shit. You simply do not understand the glories and treasures which are kept within the walls of Wawa. It is so much more than gas station food. It is a culinary experience, where you can also fill up your tank”.
But over the years, Wawa has gotten greedy. The hubris which Wawa has been operating with is astonishing. They feel as if they can do no wrong. They keep adding and adding to the menu. Quantity has completely swallowed up quality. And over these years, Wawa has become the very thing it sought out to fight against–shitty gas station food.
This latest development could be the final nail in the coffin.
There was a time where you could walk into a Wawa and have freshly sliced meat and cheese expertly layered onto a freshly baked roll, and you could enjoy a legitimately top tier hoagie. The hoagies were fresh and great. The wraps were tremendous. The pretzels were phenomenal. The salads were criminally underrated.
But as Wawa continue to grow, they just continued to add and add and add. Everything sucks now. The hoagies are trash. The wraps taste like they’ve been sitting on the shelf for a few days. The pretzels are whatever. Even the sizzli’s just don’t quite get the job done anymore. You walk into Wawa, you take a few laps around, and there’s just absolutely nothing that seems appetizing. There are a hundred options, sure, but none of them look good.
And now we’re expected to just believe a gas station can make sushi that won’t end up locking your ass into the bathroom for the next 36 hours? Get real. Like if you can’t make me a chicken caesar wrap that doesn’t feel like the lettuce just got out of a pool, then I don’t think you can make me a spicy salmon roll.
There are just so many things Wawa could focus their attention on to get back to where they used to be. Instead, they are now going to be pumping out the worst $12.99 sushi you could ask for on a road trip. Besides the coffee, there’s just nothing that Wawa does great anymore. It’s sad to see, but it’s left me no other option. I’m rooting for Sheetz and Royal Farms to annihilate them in the Convenience Store Wars. They need to take an L so they get back to doing what made them great in the first place. We’re at the beginning of Rocky III right now.
