An iconic boulevard in Osaka is joining hands with the Champs-Elysees in Paris to tackle common challenges.

A signing ceremony in Paris has set the stage for the creation of what the two sides are calling “sister streets.”

The Midosuji runs through the heart of Osaka, connecting the city’s northern and southern hubs. Work has already started on turning the avenue into a civic space centered on pedestrians.

The idea for international collaboration came from Osaka’s experiences as the host of last year’s World Expo.

The project got the green light on Wednesday. The mayor of Osaka City, Yokoyama Hideyuki, signed a memorandum of understanding with the head of a group promoting the Champs-Elysees. It says they will share know-how on creating human-centered spaces and operating major events.

Marc-Antoine Jamet, president of the Champs-Elysees Committee, said: “We have roughly the same problems. By reflecting on these challenges, I am certain we can find and share solutions. For the spatial environment and animation of public spaces, the Champs-Elysees might have lessons to share.”

Mayor Yokoyama said he aims to deepen cooperation on increasing greenery and hosting simultaneous events. He added it could become a “great legacy” of the expo.
