American forces in Japan are again in the spotlight after a U.S. Marine was arrested on suspicion of murdering a Japanese woman in Okinawa Prefecture.

The U.S. military in Okinawa announced temporary restrictions Wednesday following the incident last weekend in which the suspect, Lance Cpl. Devin Jacob Ballard, 20, allegedly killed and robbed 39-year-old Anna Yagi at a Naha hotel.

The incident has threatened to reignite simmering anger in Okinawa — home to the bulk of U.S. forces stationed in the country — but also put the central government on the back foot as it looks to double down on bolstering its defenses in the strategically vital prefecture.
