Japan Walking Tour in Otaru, Hokkaido | Summer Walk Along Higashi-Otaru Beach

A peaceful early morning walk along Higashi-Otaru Beach in Otaru, Hokkaido.

I wanted to walk as far as possible along the beach, from one end toward the other.

Compared with last year, the beach had changed. It had been partly covered with stones in some places, but this summer it was almost entirely sandy.

I especially loved the sound of small stones rolling as the waves pulled back from the shore. This time, that familiar sound was gone.

At one point, the Kamui River was shallow enough to cross, so for the first time I crossed the river and continued farther along the coast.

Beyond the sandy beach, the shoreline changed into a rocky beach. Further ahead was a narrow path between the railway tracks and the sea.

I could probably have gone a little farther, but eventually I decided it was time to turn back.

Enjoy the natural sounds of the sea, the shoreline, and trains passing beside the water in early summer morning Otaru.
