Kashiwa Edge Gamba Osaka 5-4 in Nine-Goal Thriller; Machida Beat Kyoto on Penalties [Summary: Levain CUP 1st Round – Round 4]

Two 1st Round – Round 4 matches in the Levain CUP were played ahead of schedule on 3 October.

Kashiwa took the lead at home to Gamba Osaka through Shota Fujio in the 28th minute. Gamba equalised just before half-time, but Fujio struck again in the 59th minute to restore Kashiwa’s advantage. The visitors levelled once more in the 73rd minute before going ahead in the 89th, only for Yusuke Segawa to score a dramatic equaliser in the 90+3rd minute and send the match into extra time at 3-3.

Kenshin Yuba put Kashiwa back in front in the 103rd minute, but Gamba equalised again five minutes later. Yuba then struck his second of the night in the 109th minute to seal a remarkable 5-4 victory.

Machida and Kyoto remained goalless through 120 minutes before Machida won the penalty shoot-out 5-3 to advance to the quarter-finals.
