I see so many people recommending to skip the monkey park in Arashiyama, and I just don't get it. Admittedly our experience was a few years ago, but it was one of the absolute highlights of our trip!
We stayed overnight in Arashiyama, so arrived, saw the Monkey park and walked along the river in the afternoon, and then visited bamboo grove (so overrated IMO) and temples the following morning.

I agree with this. Walking down a 60 meter path with some bamboo behind the fence I don’t understand
But walking up a hill and seeing free roaming monkeys around I can get behind. It’s also one of the few animal themed attractions in Japan that didn’t make me feel bad for participating in, unlike the cafes and fox villages
I also stayed In Arashiyama and had the same experience. I went to the bamboo forest at 4am because it was 5 minutes from my air bnb, I was the only person there and it was still just okay. It’s cool! But I saw better bamboo forests on my way to the alps.
The monkeys were great. There were a bunch of babies while we were there which was adorable. Plus the hike up the mountain is really fun!
I absolutely love Arashiyama Monkey Park. I’ve been there somewhere between 10-15 times. But I do hate that big ugly eyesore of a banana they put at the top.
Was there and loved it as well. A lot of votes to skip since people arent into a little extra walking —- esp the uphill kind
Made me realize that such a place could NEVER open in tbe US for a whole host of reasons
Been there… twice! Loved it both times. Never seen anyone talk about let alone say to skip it
