Central Tokyo breaks record with
34th consecutive day of rainfall
Central Tokyo logged a record 34th straight day with measurable rainfall on Sept. 29 as a stationary autumn rain front brought more wet weather across the Pacific side of eastern and western Japan.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, rainfall—including only trace amounts–has been recorded every day at its observation site in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward since Aug. 27.
The 34-day streak breaks the previous record of 33 consecutive rainy days from June 27 to July 29 in 2019.
In waters south of Japan, Typhoon No. 26 was moving east-northeast as of 6 a.m. on Sept. 29.
The storm had a central pressure of 985 hectopascals, with maximum sustained winds of 108 kph and gusts of up to 162 kph.
The typhoon, weaker than in the previous day, is expected to continue tracking east-northeast and then northeast, passing near the Izu Islands around Oct. 1 before moving east of Japan around Oct. 2.
