TOMAKOMAI, Hokkaido—Guests can slumber like Snorlax in Poke Ball-style rooms along the shores of a forest lake here.

In the Pokemon franchise, Poke Balls are used to capture, store and transport various monsters. But at the Poke Ball-Themed Hotel, they are used mainly for rest and relaxation.

Each room is 3 meters in diameter and contains a custom-made circular mattress.

The capsule rooms also come with a tablet device that guests can use to choose their favorite Pokemon and change the lighting effects to match the monsters when they turn off the light.

An annex equipped with a shower and other amenities features tiles in the color inspired by Snorlax, the “sleeping” Pokemon.

A cottage about five minutes from the Poke Balls can be used for dining and other activities. It also features sleeping Pokemon.

“While we placed importance on the Pokemon universe, we devised ways to ensure sound sleep with the mattress, lighting and air-conditioning devices,” said Yuuri Ueno, the project manager in charge of designing and installing the capsules.

The hotel is part of a campaign for the Pokemon Sleep game app.

Ten pairs of guests will be selected by lottery from those who download the app and apply through the exclusive website at (https://www.pokemonsleep.net/pokeball-hotel/).

There will be no tours for the general public.
