Japan is broadening its involvement with the worldwide Travel and Tourism sector via a freshly inked alliance that brings together the World Travel and Tourism Council, the Japan Association of Travel Agents and the Tourism EXPO Japan Executive Committee, as reported by TradeArabia News Service. A Memorandum of Understanding has been concluded by the three bodies, concentrating on teamwork, creativity, information sharing and global participation, with the declared objective of bolstering Japan’s position within the worldwide Travel and Tourism community.

WTTC President and CEO Gloria Guevara, JATA Chairman Yuji Hara and TEJ Executive Committee Chairperson Eijiro Yamakita all put their names to the deal. Through the arrangement, the parties will seek avenues for research and knowledge sharing, cross-border dialogue, industry involvement and cooperation linking Japan’s tourism sector with global industry stakeholders.

Economic Weight of the Sector

The tie-up arrives as Japan’s Travel and Tourism industry keeps delivering robust economic expansion. WTTC’s most recent Economic Impact Research shows the sector added 343.1 billion dollars to Japan’s economy during 2025, amounting to 8.1 percent of total GDP, which placed Japan as the fifth-biggest Travel and Tourism economy worldwide. The sector’s growth for the year reached 4.6 percent, while Japan’s broader economy grew by 1.1 percent.

Overseas tourism has been a key engine behind that growth. Foreign visitors laid out 63.3 billion dollars in Japan in 2025, putting the nation seventh globally for international visitor spending, an improvement from fifteenth position in 2019. Such spending climbed 8.8 percent compared with the previous year and was 74.9 percent above the 2019 level.

Support for Japan’s tourism expansion has come from its global brand appeal, a varied tourism offering, connectivity and transport infrastructure. Digital transformation is likewise underway in the sector, encompassing the uptake of AI-driven technologies and automation aimed at boosting workforce efficiency, simplifying operations and improving the visitor experience. With this as the backdrop, the fresh partnership will concentrate on backing innovation, competitiveness and resilience throughout the sector.

Destination Stewardship and Cooperation Areas

The organisations further drew attention to the rising significance of destination stewardship, observing that growing international visitor numbers heighten the need to reconcile tourism growth with the concerns of local communities.

Guevara portrayed Japan as having constructed one of the world’s most successful Travel and Tourism economies, merging an exceptional tourism offering with robust connectivity and a forward-looking stance on tourism development. According to her, the agreement unites three organisations sharing an ambition to reinforce Japan’s links with the global Travel and Tourism community and to generate fresh collaboration opportunities. She noted that with the sector entering a new era moulded by AI and digital transformation, innovation and collaboration will be more crucial than ever, and that the partnership allows the parties to exchange knowledge, encourage the uptake of new technologies, assist in raising workforce efficiency and open up opportunities for businesses and destinations. She also voiced the aim of working jointly to back the long-term growth of Japan’s Travel and Tourism sector and to reinforce its role on the world stage.

Hara described the signing of the tourism cooperation Memorandum of Understanding with the WTTC, which he called a leading international organisation representing the private sector, as a notable milestone for JATA, itself a private-sector tourism industry body. He voiced anticipation that Japanese and international private-sector tourism players would join forces to share insights and knowledge, thus fostering sustainable, long-term and inclusive tourism and pushing forward initiatives that serve their respective members.

Yamakita voiced delight at the memorandum’s signing. He remarked that the arrangement for the WTTC to take part in Tourism EXPO Japan, reached through the memorandum, would assist in boosting the event’s international profile. He further noted that Japan’s involvement in WTTC-organised events would encourage mutual exchange and help raise Japan’s profile in the international tourism sector.

As set out in the MOU, the organisations will look into swapping research, reports, market intelligence, insights and best practices, along with possible joint research and activities at major Travel and Tourism events both in Japan and abroad. The partnership will additionally help forge connections linking JATA and TEJ stakeholders with WTTC members and the broader global tourism community. Additional cooperation will centre on digital transformation, innovation, destination management and sustainable tourism development.

The agreement sets up a fresh cooperation framework between Japan’s tourism industry and international partners as the country aims to capitalise on its recent tourism growth while reinforcing its global engagement.
