Found Japan’s Real-Life Ghibli Coastal Town in Tomonoura, Hiroshima | Japan Travel

Discovering Tomonoura, a timeless seaside town on the coast of Hiroshima, Japan. 🇯🇵

We arrived early in the morning, while the old streets were still quiet and most shops had yet to open.

Once an important port on the Seto Inland Sea, Tomonoura has preserved much of its historic atmosphere. We spent the day wandering through its old streets and harbor, visiting temples, traditional houses, and places connected to the town’s long history.

Along the way, we visited the iconic Jōyatō lighthouse, Fukuzenji Temple and Taichoroh, Iōji Temple, the historic Ota Residence, and learned about the story of the Irohamaru and Sakamoto Ryoma.

We also enjoyed Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki prepared right in front of us, found some unexpected local cats, and discovered little reminders of Ponyo throughout the town.

And of course, this wouldn’t be Japan Vibes without a few coffee stops along the way. ☕😅

Tomonoura may be small, but there’s a lot to discover here. From its quiet harbor and old streets to its history, food, and seaside views, it was a wonderful place to spend the day.
