Festival at a Japanese Surf Town

Tsurigasaki Beach in Ichinomiya is best known as the host site of the first-ever Olympic surfing event. But come September, a tradition dating back over 1,200 years takes top billing here beside the Pacific Ocean: the Kazusa Junisha Festival (上総十二社祭り)

On the festival’s main day, September 13, bearers of ‘mikoshi’ (portable shrines) gather along the shore to take part in a unique procession. With the ocean, the chants, and the festive spirit of the local community, it makes for an unforgettable glimpse of traditional Japanese festival culture.

We recommend arriving at Tsurigasaki Beach around 2:30 PM to see the festival at its liveliest (schedule subject to change).
