A major volcanic eruption in Indonesia over the weekend continues to affect people’s daily lives.
Anak Krakatau volcano, located in Sunda Strait, between the islands of Java and Sumatra, has been erupting since Friday. A plume of ash and smoke reached an altitude of 15,000 meters.
Reuters news agency reports that schools in the Banten region began online classes on Monday due to concerns over students’ health. Remote learning is also being conducted in Jakarta.
A primary school principal urged students and teachers to wear masks and be on the alert for health problems.
Indonesian authorities say volcanic ash had forced the closure of seven airports, including the country’s main gateway Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, as of 6 PM Monday, local time. They say a total of 2,300 flights were affected between Saturday and Monday morning, impacting 270,000 passengers.
The authorities say the series of eruptions appears to have subsided. But they warn that the possibility of further eruptions remains high. It is still prohibited to enter within a 3-kilometer radius of the volcano.
